About Mark

Mark Burnette is currently a consultant working with IT organizations across America and is an executive with the LionHeart Group, a risk management firm focusing on identity theft and helping organizations comply with the FACTA red flag rules.  

Prior to his current roles, Mark was the Executive Director of IT Operations & Security for Gaylord Entertainment Company, the fastest growing specialty lodging and entertainment organization in America.  Mark had company-wide responsibilities for Gaylord’s IT infrastructure function, including desktops, servers, databases, the network, and information security.  His responsibilities spanned numerous properties and attractions and more than 14,000 employees across the country.  In addition to his strategic leadership, Mark was responsible for coordinating IT compliance with business regulatory requirements such as Sarbanes-Oxley and Payment Card Industry standards.  A passionate and seasoned IT leader, Mark was a 2008 Information Security Magazine Security 7 Award Winner and was named as one of the ComputerWorld Premier 100 IT Leaders for 2009.


Before joining Gaylord Entertainment, Mark was the Global Information Security Officer for Willis, the third largest risk management company in the world.  In that role he built a comprehensive information security program and oversaw IS compliance with numerous business regulations in over 100 countries across the world.  While at Willis, he was named the Information Security Executive of the Year at the Executive Alliance ISE Southeast Awards in March 2005.  Prior to his corporate life, Mark worked for several years with two of the Big 5 accounting firms where he specialized in developing, implementing, assessing, and securing Information Technology solutions for companies in the healthcare, retail, manufacturing, banking, and insurance industries.


Recognized as a security expert by technology think-tank Gartner, Mark has been featured as a subject matter expert on ABC and CBS television affiliates numerous times, in print media such as CSO magazine, Secure Enterprise, and Information Security magazine, and is a noted author and a frequent speaker to International conferences and specialty groups such as ISACA, IMA, IIA, & ISSA, and on College and University campuses across the United States.  He has numerous professional certifications, including Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), and Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and is ITIL Foundations V3 certified.  Mark is a founding member of the Middle Tennessee Chapter of the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) and is the Chairman of the Board and Master of Ceremonies of InfoSec Nashville, a major annual Information Security conference that is hosted in Nashville and draws security experts and executives from across the United States. He is a co-founder of the Southeast CSO Council, a community for senior security leaders in the Southeastern US, he is the InfoSec sector leader for the State of Tennessee Office of Homeland Security Advisory Council, and he was recently tapped by Nashville Mayor Karl Dean to serve as one of the 7 inaugural members on the Information Security Advisory Board for the Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County Government.  On September 11, 2008, Mark received a Certificate of Appreciation from Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen in recognition of outstanding service in the best interests and highest traditions of the State of Tennessee, and in March of 2009 Mark was recognized as the Distinguished Young Alumnus by the Division of Business at his undergraduate alma mater, Carson-Newman College.
